Adding Color to a Beige Apartment

 In Uncategorized

You had visions for a zen NoHo apartment. A creamy refuge in the center of the busiest city in the world filled with soothing colors and neutral center-pieces. Yet, you’ve been swimming in this beige ocean for a few months and something is nagging at you. Where’s the color? Where’s the excitement? Where’s the hot pink nail polish stains that dotted the carpet of your childhood bedroom? There must be some medium between calming tones and a color explosion. Without going totally Jackson Pollack on your NoHo apartment, here are a few tips to achieving the perfect pop of color in a neutral apartment.

Start Low

PUT DOWN THE PAINTBRUSH! Phew, now that we got that out of the way let’s get on with it. Painting your walls, or fireplace, or armoire should be the last step your color journey (unless your ready for that commitment). Instead, opt for something a little less permanent, like an area rug. Whether your apartment is blessed with hardwood floors, or you’ve been dealt the unlucky hand of a carpeted rental, area rugs add a pop of color without the commitment. Experiment with plush fabrics and funky colors, like this rainbow rug from Dash and Albert. Put it in your bedroom, living room, even as a little mat in the bathroom (just like grandma). And the best part? If it’s not your style, just roll it up and send it back.

Move onto The Couch

You’ve always been a little jealous of people who splurge on teal velvet plush couches. But you’re playing it safe with a soft beige couch that you can look at for the next 3,000 years without getting bored. What you lose with buying said neutral couch is the opportunity for a colorful focal point. Yet, if you think of your neutral NoHo apartment as a blank canvas, then you have a lot (350 square feet?) to work with. Throwing some accent pillows or a funky blanket onto your couch not only highlights those creamy tones but adds a pop of color as well! Experiment with different colors and textures for a collection of pillows that excite and delight.

Your NoHo Apartment Walls

Again, if you want to paint go right ahead. But try something more temporary on for size. Your walls are wide expanses of possibility. With a mostly neutral apartment palette, your options are completely open. Introduce any color you want from electric blue to neon orange. Invest in paintings from local artists or chic wall décor from HomeGoods. Alternatively, dress up your windows with eye-catching drapes and shades. Get funky with your décor and piece by piece your beige NoHo apartment will start to feel a little more complete.
